Fatblogging to the five minute mile
When i bought the treadmill doing a 10 minute mile was a very painful. Since that time, and since last years 207 record fatness, I've been able to do under 10 minute miles without too much pain.
Then I started doing HIIT training and that included 60 second sprints at 8-10 MPH--or a pace of up to a 6 minute mile for 60 seconds. Those sprints killed me, like jello legs the next day killed me. Last week I decided to go for it and go up to 11MPH--a sub six minute mile. When I was 18-25 years old I could run a sub-six minute mile. In fact I think I got down to almost a 5 minute mile. That's 12 MPH--basically a flat out sprint.
This got my mind to thinking.... "hmmmm, I wonder if I could get down to a six minute mile." Of course, once you start thinking about a six minute mile your mind goes to the next logical step... a five minute mile. What if I could run my fastest pace at 36 years old. That would be a major accomplishment considering the fact that when I ran the marathon I was 162/165 pounds, and last year I tipped the scale at 207--a 40 pound swing.
Today I started the program: I did an 8 minute mile. My right knee and left shin had some pain, and after four minute I got cramps across my still very fat gut. Still, eight minutes is a nice pace and I'm sure I could have done it faster if I pushed myself. I figure if i can cut 30 seconds a month off my mile I'll be in the six minute range in the fall.
I've got all summer to work on it. :-)
How are my other FatBloggers doing?!?! I hear Jaffe is at 195 and closing in on Calacanis!

(Page 1 of 1)3. Glad to see the fatblogging is working for you. I'm hitting 189 the last couple of weeks but it sounds like you're running a good bit faster than me. I got up to 7 MPH yesterday and it was bit rough. My main goal isn't speed though, I'm hoping to hit 180 by July 4 (b-day) and then 160 in another 6 months and then maintain!
4. Managed to hit 218 today, a drop of about 30lbs from when I started Fatblogging back in February. That's pretty massive, I think. When I started, I couldn't run for 10 minutes without needing a break. Over the weekend, I went out for a 45 minute jog along the river. I'm in the best shape of my life, now I just have to keep going!

5. Thanks for the inspiration, Jason. I started setting up a fatblog a while ago but quit before it went anywhere. I recently turned 29 and have been thinking I'd like to lose "30 by 30". I'd also begun studies as a fitness instructor, thinking I would finally back myself into a corner to get into shape. My textbook is collecting dust, lol.
Keep up the fatblogging! I'm watching you and it helps!

7. Hey, that's a nice goal. My goal was to run a sub-six mile last year and I finally did it on Dec 29th. The only problem is the stupid ramp up time of the treadmill - you actually have to run faster than 6:00 pace to make up for the time lost on startup. Now I'm slow and big again. Good luck!

8. Good luck with your goal. I had gone from ~ 140 lbs in high-school up to a high of almost 220 in my 30s. I've dropped back down to about 145 lbs since I started running about a year ago and just broke 6:00 for the mile last weekend. Like you, I've also set my sights on trying to go after a 5:00 mile. It is really motivating hearing about people in a very similar position.

1. ...on a tread mill it's one thing, but outside is a complete other. 5 minutes equates to 10...try it.
