3. Seriously brilliant podcast. I can't think of anyone in podcasting that could (or would) get Jeff Jarvis and a Tribune insider on the same mic. You really get a sense of this huge switchover being about to happen in the old media: although it's going to be painful.

I love the bit about how journalists can't keep up. The solution is to get involved in blogging, podcasting etc. That's the only way to keep up.

4. Jason, great cast. Jarvis is dead on with the analogy of Google = the world's newsstand, but I'm a little shocked that he actually agreed to be involved in a conversation involving a guy hiding behind a fake name/fake voice. That typically pisses him off. I thought he would at least call Mr. Tribune a wuss or something! A little disappointing.

One video suggestion: Either give us more of an "in your face" style (more eye contact) or make it more of a rough "I'm just having a conversation and a camera happens to be in the corner of the room" type of feel. It seems very much "in between" right now. Keep up the good work.

5. No surprise the journo wasn't "that familiar" with his topic-- typical! Look, I spent 2 years in a journalism curriculum at my state's biggest university. Guess what? 2 years mostly wasted, that's what it was. You can teach the fundamentals of journalism in ONE semester (18 hours of classes, but still).

It takes a lifetime to master those basics, however.

Most journalists are treated like dirt, and rarely if ever have the time to actually investigate their topics, and rare is the bird, outside the sports pages, who is allowed the freedom to pursue context on any story.

My freshman year in college I wrote a great research paper on science journalism. Like today, I found it was lacking because so many reporters aren't vested in the topic, they don't have any particular insight or specialized knowledge on the subject they are writing about... it's just a gig.

That, in part, is why blogging was so attractive to me. You get called out pretty quick when you feign enthusiasm for something you know nothing of in the blogosphere.

He couldn't talk to his own article? CYA should be amended to every reporter's title. "Hi, I'm Dirk Daring, CYA reporter for the Boomtown Times." Great 'cast.

"Everyone in the newspaper business is getting their ass kicked, basically", Jason. The way he says that at 28:30 is a movie moment.

Jason, the heart of this is at 10:30 when you describe Sam Zell not being challenged by Washington Post on the factuality of Zellon's assertions, nor did the Washington Post put the story in a context that questioned those assertions. I am sure some people read that story and believe Google to be stealing articles because of those people's trust in the Washington Post. What's up Frank Ahrens and Karl Vick?
