Direct TV HD: NOT ThisNext just yet...
It just doesn't have the amount of programming it should for the prices they are charging for the hardware and subscriptions. If you love tech stuff and want to show off go for it, but if you're looking to get value I'd say wait another six months when (I hear) there will be much more content available.

I wonder what HDBeat thinks?

(Page 3 of 6)42. Had DTV install the HD receiver a month ago. It went bad within 2 weeks with frequent video and audio drops. They sent me a new one. This one is worse then the first. More prolonged outages video and audio. You have to keep resetting the receiver or run the satellite setup to get the picture and sound back. Have called customer service on this several times. They have no solutions that work. We are ready to go back to our old receiver or cancel and go back to cable. Very disappointing.. Don't order the HD package until something is done about these defective receivers.

43. We've had Direct TV service for only 3 months and have found that's been 3 months to long. The "customer serice" we've received is so bad we're going to cancel our contract (aka indentured servant contract). We've decided to cancel the credit card Dirct TV has on file for us and also have our banking institution change our account number. I suggest all dissatified Direct TV customers try similar tactics and beat them at their own game.

44. For all of you Direct TV customers who feel Direct TV used unscrupulous sales techniques or business practices to lock you into a long term contract or cannot resolve service or billing issues read on...If I can find legal counsel who believes a case can be brought against Direct TV for fraudulent business practices are you all in? Like all of you, my husband and I are now locked in to a long term contract and face hefty penalities if we cancel. We purchased DVR service two months ago and the hardware was incorrectly installed. The tech knew the equipment needed two cable lines but chose not to inform us. Instead he hooked up the single cable line that we had and told us everything was working properly and left. Hours later we tried to record one program while watching a second program only to find out it didn't work (the sole reason anyone purchases a DVR or TIVO machine!!!). When we called Cust Svc to determine the problem we were told it was OUR responsibility to insure everything was working properly before the technician left. How absurd! Isn't the technician suppose to be the expert? And since when has any customer offered coffee and donuts to a tech and politely asked them to wait an hour or so while they dial through all the service features? Get real. After numerous phone calls, hours invested in trying to resolve this, promises that the Escalation Dept would fix this (sound familiar?), three separate visits by Direct TVs subcontracted techs, we are STILL PAYING FOR DVR SERVICE THAT WE ARE NOT GETTING. We then contacted the Better Business Bureau to file a formal complaint. The outcome? Nothing. All they do is file your complaint and allow you and Direct TV two rounds of written comments via their website. If Direct TV is unwilling to resolve the issue you're back to square one. So what are your (our) options from here? Most of us are locked in to a long term contract that is too costly to terminate, are not getting the service we agreed to purchase and Direct TV promised during the initial sales call, are paying upcharges because Direct TV failed to inform us that certain types of hardware or services require "custom work" or additional fees, are getting overbilled, can't get a competent local technician to fix the problem, or anyone who can think beyond a telephone script to help, and so on. Are we all willing to take this lying down? Anyone remember the class action suit against AT&T for overbilling minutes? It took one customer to start the ball rolling. AT&T was fined and had to pay restitution to the customers who were overcharged. Anthony and Lexie's blog isn't the only complaint site, unfortunately. Direct TV shouldn't get away with this. Keep your comments coming...

46. Spent this morning with DirectTV people in regards to why 10 of my HD Channels are scambled, this started about 4weeks ago, they want to sell me a service contract or me pay for a $70.00 service call to correct this problem, the 10 channels i should be able to get as per Direct TV.

47. I feel that Direct TV is double dipping on their billing. I have kept my invoices for the past year. When I call to get an explanation, the unwary customer service representative agrees that their practices are questionable. I demanded a corrected invoice because I would not pay anymore from incorrect invoices that were not credited correctly.
The problem is, everyone thinks it is just them. We need to bring a class action suit against Direct TV and its billing practices. If you just keep paying your bill without questioning it, they will continue to bill erroneously.
I have been in the legal field, paralegal, and this is a matter that needs to be addressed.

48. How about this one? I had a problem with the receiver which caused my TV not to work. Direct TV sent me a new receiver and then automatically extended my contract for an additional 2 years because I "ordered a new receiver." I didn't order a new receiver!! The first one didn't work anymore!! And....they're not backing down on the extended contract time. I've spoken to everyone right to the top. Help!!! I never want to see Direct TV again.

49. I had a one year agreement with direct tv according to the ad I responded to online."You'll be amazed at the incredible free deal - no hidden surprises - no catch - just sign up for 12 consecutive months of television programming from Directv or the Dish Network and you will get up to $1500 worth of free equipment professionally installed. Subscribers save a lot of money compare"Very similar to this ad they are running now. At the end of my contract I cancelled and paid the final fee. They then tell me if I have a dvr that automatically makes it a two year contract. At no time til I cancelled was this ever mentioned. They then proceed to steal money from my account unauthorized by me. Beware, it seems to be standard policy now.I would be willing to join a suit against them for theft. I sent back their equipment 5 days ago with fed-ex, was told by the fed-ex guy everybody else is putting a hold on their checking accounts and cancelling any credit cards that direct tv has on file. This is standard practice.

50. Make sure you read the find print on Direct Tv contract.
When I signed up for HD reception I was assured I would recevie loacl programing, needless to say local programing is not available in my zip code in HD, therefore I had to install an antenna. Also I was informed this morning that two of the HD channels that were in the package I purchased are being moved to a special package that cost an additional 4.99 per month. When I asked how could this happen I was told the fine print gives Direct Tv the right to do this.
And finally the reception of the new HD stations recently launched sucks.

51. i upgraded to dvr hd, with only two concerns, programing for recording is more difficult than my old tivo. second, the words do not match up with the lips of the actors. It's like i'm on a 2-second delay. Any help?

52. Im game for a fight. How is it legal and/or common practice for DTV to take money out of your account without permission. They took money from a CC that was used in 2005 and had already expired. How is it possible that the banking systems dont protect our money.

54. I also noticed today that Direct TV took money out of my checking account that was un-authorized. I have never given them my credit card number intentionally. I did however pay via their web site and a few times over their automated system. When I called them today about it they gave the run around. I have constantly had problems with my service and with their customer service. I am moving now and will not be getting Direct TV again.

55. I called direct tv and ordered a four room installation with one of the receivers to be HD. We got the total choice package. She said we would get free Show time and free Hd for the term of our one year contract. So I asked her what my total bill would be each month. She said 49.99.Then I asked her again "you mean my total bill every moth would be 49.99?" She said yes plus whatever tax, about 1 or 2 dollars more and you will have to give us a credit card # and a 99.00 charge for installation would be charged ,but you will get refunded for that. Ok great ,sign me up. It took three months to get my 99.00 refunded and I was being charged for three extra receivers at 4.99 each which put me at about 71.00 a month. After hours of talking with someone they waived 2 of the receiver charges and I agreed to pay for one. Now my bill is 56.00. So about three months ago my bills stopped coming to the house and they called and said they were going to interupt my service. They said the bills were being sent to my e-mail. I never authorized e mail billing. So I checked but most of the bills were being thrown into my spam folder. My contract was to be up on jan27 2008 so i called today to cancel after that and they tell me I have a two year contract because I got an HD receiver. They said I would have to pay an early cancellation fee(acouple of hundred dollars. Nope I said I wont pay it. Check your quality assurance tape that you recorded on jan 25 2007 and you will clearly hear your rep telling me I had a one year contract. I hooked up a great antenna and am now getting 14 channels of HD that blows away satellite HD and the best thing is its free.Feb 2008 is the deadline for broadcast networks to stop analog broadcasting. Every thing will be in digital. I getting NBC CBS ABC FOX the CW channel and many public broadcasting channels for free. No more satellite bills.Their programming has really gotten crappy any way

56. I ordered a one year contract for DirectTV and had them install the dish on a pole. Apparently the location they installed the dish did not provide adequate visibility to all their satellites so none of my HD channels come in. When I called and complained they said I should have bought the insurance so I need to pay $80 for them to come re-align the dish and an additional $80 to move the pole to a different location from the one THEY PICKED to begin with. On top of this, they told me that since I had signed up for HD, that I have a two year contract instead of the 1 year that I agreed to.

57. For anyone that wishes to bring a class action lawsuit against DirectTV I'm in as they have taken 366 dollars in a 3 month period (June 07, November 07, January 08). The funny thing about January 08 said my phone call for 134.88 had cleared on January 16. How can I make that call when I'm in the local hospital from January 8-18 and my cell phone was not with me (about 5 miles away- left at my residence- only phone). I discovered who the President of Direct TV is and have written him a letter of complaint with a few threats that if I discover the person(s) who are doing this I will contact the state police in 4 states and file criminal charges plus inform all media about what I'm doing. The way I got the information went to DirectTV Website, then went to about them link and then pretended I wanted a job there. The president of DirectTV Customer Satisfaction is Joe Peterson 15009 Lancaster Heighway; Charlotte NC.

58. IHATE DIRECT TV. I purchased a new LCD HD TV in Nov. and had the HD dish and DVR installed shortly after. I have had nothing but problems with this company: about 7 service calls and 3 boxes so far. Yet, the problem remains unresolved: "searching for satellite on 1" on the screen at times, in different HD channels. I have also experienced having had to reset the box altogether at least twice. Their service sucks; they lie, lie, lie.
And they claim one is subjected to a 2-yr agreement due having ordered new equipment, which I bought from Best Buy. I AM ALL FOR THE CLASS ACTION. We must stop the abuse and monopoly!

59. We just bought an hd read tv, had Dish replace old satellite receiver with hd/dvr receiver. Our picture quality is worse than it was before on new screen.
Regular programming channels almost come in cartoonish and blurry. HD channels are not clear as I've heard they should be.
We've changed the screen size, we've reset the satellite receiver, talked to techs on the phone.
This is very disappointing, and hoping we don't have to go through a lot of bull to get a better picture.
It's very unwatchable at the moment!

41. We switched over to Direct TV HD in order to pick up the NFL Ticket. We are wondering how many other people were scammed by Direct TV into believing they would get the ticket in HD? Now there is an add'l fee of $99. When we called to get info; the customer service supervisor admitted it wasn't published anywhere that HD is not part of the package and we were not offered the HD extra when we purchased the NFL Ticket back in August. The same supervisor admitted they have gotten this complaint alot-I call it fraud, bait and switch; however you look at it-we were deliberately misled. It's disappointing to be treated like this - Comcast has much better programing and had we the opportunity to review the full cost it is possible we may just have continued to meet up with friends to watch the games like we have the past several years. Has anyone else had this problem?
